Yes, we think it is a black carpenter ant. Is that why you are using wood instead of plaster? We just read the whole thread on home made formicariums and there were hardly any wood. We are wondering why...perhaps the wood get moldy or something? BTW, we used to live in CS...near Air Academy

We like your ant journal...very organized. Your second Queen (in photos) looks just like ours. What set up do you have her in? BTW, we found our ant at appx 7000ft...we have no 14ers in Montana so good question
